National Innovation Visa
The National Innovation visa (subclass 858) is an invitation-only permanent visa. It is for exceptionally talented migrants from across the world.
It is for established and emerging leaders with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement, who can make significant contributions in sectors of national importance that will benefit Australia’s future prosperity.
These migrants will help create jobs and drive productivity growth in key sectors of the Australian economy.
The NIV is for established and emerging leaders with high-calibre talent and skills who can make significant contributions that will benefit Australia’s future prosperity.
This includes:
- global researchers
- entrepreneurs
- innovative investors
- athletes and creatives.
Step 1 – Expression of interest
We must invite you before you can apply for this visa.
Submit an expression of interest (EOI) if you would like to be considered for an invitation to apply. We will issue invitations based on the National Innovation visa priorities.

Step 2 – Wait for an invitation to apply
After you submit an EOI, you must wait for an invitation before you can apply for this visa. EOIs will remain active for 2 years from the date you submit it. During this time, we may invite you to apply for this visa.
If you do not receive an invitation within this 2-year period, your EOI will expire.

Step 3 – Apply for the National Innovation (subclass 858) visa
If we invite you to apply for the National Innovation (subclass 858) visa, apply for the visa within 60 days of the date of the invitation.
To support your application, a nominator must complete a
Nomination for National Innovation visa (Form 1000).
You must submit the completed Form 1000 when you make your application.
